Communication Skills & Public Speaking Course

It has become inevitable for the corporate personals to equip themselves with different soft skills required for them to be an effective and unavoidable work force in the industry. This course aims at equipping the students, corporate employees, and others with different business communication skills.

Course Objectives

This course introduces the basics and different models of communication; and corporate soft skills and how to write the business messages along with various dimensions of corporate communication. This is a skills-based course aimed to make the students become a better public speaker through theory and, most importantly, practice.  This course is an introduction to speech communication which emphasises the practical skill of public speaking, including techniques to lessen speaker anxiety, and the use of visual aids to enhance speaker presentations.

Course Outcomes

After completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Write for brochures, pamphlets and House Journals etc.

  • Produce corporate literature and conduct press conferences
  • Understand communication ​concepts ​ that serve as a basis for ​effective speaking ​, and ​apply this conceptual knowledge ​ in practice to give effective speeches
  • Be a more ​analytical listener​, and develop the ability to analyse and evaluate presentations made by others
  • Plan and prepare speeches that inform, persuade, or fulfil the needs of a special occasion
  • Use presentation aids to enhance speeches
  • Develop and demonstrate ​verbal, nonverbal, and research competencies through researching, preparing, and delivering the speeches in a logical and thorough fashion
  • Analyse audience and design speeches to reflect your analysis
  • Learn how to ​ask good questions ​ and provide ​meaningful answers ​to question
  • Gain confidence ​ to speak publicly in a variety of situations

Basics of Communication: Definition – Characteristics- types of communication – Cliques-   Grapevine, rumour – Understanding & Levels of communication. Models of communication: Aristotle – Berlo- Shannon & Weaver –Schramm’s – Westley & Mclean – Gerbner. Personality profiling: Assessing F2F – Phone communication skills – Listening skills.

Corporate Soft-skills: Emotional Intelligence – Emotional Quotient – Importance of Emotions – Levels of Emotional Awareness – Managing Negative Emotions – Developing EQ. Business Communication Skills: Components of Communication-Barriers to Communication: Overcoming barriers – Purposeful Communication. Nonverbal Communication: Common Gestures and their Meanings – How appearance and how Body Language Communicates

UNIT 2

Effective Business Messages: The Seven C’s of Effective Communication: Five Planning Steps – Basic Organizational Plans – Beginning and Endings – Composing the Message. Effective Communication: Improving My skills – Self Assessment – Strengths – Weaknesses. Stages of Effective Communication: Prepare the Message – Matching to the Receiver – The Means of Delivery – Preparing the Receiver and Message Delivery – Getting the Effective Feedback – Giving Feedback to others.

Press Release:  Structure – Writing – Designing. Production of corporate literature (House journals, newsletters, brochures, pamphlets, annual reports, magazines and e-magazines, press releases) – Corporate Communication and Public Relations on a Global Level.

UNIT 3

Interpersonal Communication: Symbolic Interaction theory of George Herbert Mead: Expectancy violations theory: space relations – personal space – proxemic zones – territoriality. Relationship Development: Social Penetration theory: personality structure – closeness through self-disclosure – depth & breadth of the disclosure. Social Information Processing Theory: CMC Vs Face to Face – verbal cues of affinity – non-verbal cues.

UNIT 4

Introduction to Public Speaking – The Origins of Public Speaking – Elements of Public Speaking- Ethics in Public Speaking –  building the Speaker–Listener Connection. Persuasive Speaking – challenges and design.  Using Narratives in Public Speaking- Understanding the Audience- Managing fear of speaking

Speech Roadmaps: Introductions, Transitions, and Conclusions-Adapting to Your Audience and Situation- Ceremonial Speaking -Selecting and researching Your Topic.

Effective Listening- Informative Speaking- Structuring, outlining and presenting speech with visual aids- Using Language Effectively. Speaking in Groups.
